OUGD405: How to...

We've been briefed on a new module which is named 'Design Process'. The module focuses on 'the investigation and development of ideas through appropriate forms of documentation and recording.

We were split into groups and given a subject, our subject was 'Routine'

We summarized the word and  split it into categories:

-Morning routine
-Daily routine
-Dance routine
-Monthly routine
-Routine check (Health inspections etc.)
-Fitness routine
-Work related routine
-Medication routine
-Depending on routines
-Preparatory routines
-OCD

After choosing a subcategory we were asked to create three visual design boards. One primary research board, one secondary and one showing the direction of where the research is taking me.

I've started by creating a questionnaire which will allow me to gather research on the routine in which people follow in the morning, whether this routine is effected by factors such as work and school and whether they'd like to improve their morning routine.

Here are the three visual information boards which i created using primary and secondary research. I was looking into morning routines:

We proceeded to discuss our boards within our group during a crit. Everybody had an input within the group discussion and the research was of a good quality. We were given a brief and asked to go away in our groups and discuss what we wanted to do.

Our group decided on exercise for students who maybe don't get enough in their daily routine. We've been asked to come up with a solution to make people want to try something new. We decided upon exercise because it's something which not a lot of students will participate in because of factors like work, money and time etc. We will create an exercise routine which can not only be fast and efficient but wont get in the way of important work.

We started by creating a questionnaire to help us gather data about who exercises, and if not, why?

As a group we've decided to create an info graphic type poster giving students the opportunity to participate in simple yet effective exercise routines. The exercises will be easily done in the flat or house. We've picked five exercises to work with as we believe these are unisex and are easy enough to do with simple instructions.

Here is some work which Ellen has researched about the different routines:

Squats :
  1. Stand with your feet facing forward and your chest held out
  2. Place your feet at shoulder width apart and stretch your arms out in front of you
  3. Sit back and down as if you were going to sit on a chair. Keep your knees behind your toes whilst squatting and make sure your back is straight.
  4. Lower yourself until you thighs are parallel with the floor and press your weight into your heels.
  5. Keep your body tight and push into your heels to bring yourself back to the first position

Sit ups :
  1. Lie down and have your knees bent and the balls of your feet placed flat on the ground
  2. Place your hands at either side of your head
  3. Tighten your abdominal muscles gently by drawing in your belly button to your spine
  4. Keeping your feet on the ground slowly lift your head followed by your shoulder blades until you are at a 90 degree angle
  5. Hold the position for a second then slowly return to starting position

 Step Ups :
  1. Position yourself standing as tall as possible facing forward in the centre of a step
  2. Lift your left foot off the ground and place it on top of the step
  3. Next lift your right foot and use your muscles to position it on the step above
  4. Carefully place your right foot back on the ground, followed by your left foot
  5. Repeat this process for one minute

Invisible Chair :
  1. Lean your back against the wall, with your feet shoulder width apart, approximately 12 inches from the wall
  2. Slide down the wall until you look like you are sitting on an invisible chair
  3. Your legs should be at a 90 degree angle and your knees should be behind your toes
  4. Hold the position for one minute and repeat when you feel necessary

Push - ups :
  1. Place your toes and hands on the floor making sure that your back and arms are straight. Keep your hands shoulder width apart.
  2. Lower yourself to the floor and stop as your elbows reach a 90 degree bend. Make sure that your body does not touch the floor
  3. Push yourself away from the floor without bending your back
  4. Repeat several times

I was asked to design the layout of the info graphic. I drew out some design ideas before developing them on illustrator.

I was trying out colours which i thought would suit the tone of voice which we were portraying. I didn't want the colours to be to corporate, i wanted them to show energy and productivity.

As a group we brainstormed a few ideas for names.

We came up with several names such as activise, and refresher. The name we ended up picking was NUYU. It was simple and told you what the leaflet really was aiming to achieve.

As a group we worked together creating the front and back of the leaflet. We all added elements of our ideas and used each others skills to our advantage.

We designed our logo on illustrator. We chose orange as the background because it created a sense of energy, it allowed the white to flow which kept with are theme of athleticism and sport.

We sat down as a group and created the leaflet, everybody helped and added to the designing, it was a huge help having the opinions of everybody, it allowed us to correct what was wrong and allowed for less mistakes.

We printed out our initial design as a rough draft to see what the leaflet will look like when its finally printed out:

Here is our final design. The front gives the audience information on what NUYU aims to achieve, along with five different exercises giving precise instructions on how to preform each. The back informs the user on what muscle each exercise trains and the calories lost after each session.

The leaflet can be folded up and can either be stuck on a wall or mirror. We perforated each section allowing for the user to detach each exercise allowing you to carry it with you, or stick it up onto the specific area to where the exercise can be preformed.

We also designed two posters which promoted the leaflet.
