From our previous brief which involved collecting research on a specific newspaper article, we were set another brief to design three high impact posters.
The brief asked that we created one poster which was type, one which is image, and one which was image and type. We were asked to come up with a range of initial ideas before starting our final posters.
I constructed this mind map to help me get a starting point to what my posters would incorporate. For my research i looked at the seven scientists who were jailed for failing to predict a major earthquake, along with this i looked at warning signs and awareness posters for natural disasters. I decided that I'd create safety measure signs in the event of a natural disaster, so i looked at all the different disasters and the safety precautions carried out for them.
I decided I'd create one of my three posters for volcano's, one for earthquakes, and one for a blizzard.
Here are some initial ideas for each design:
After finishing some designs i realised that it was easier if i stuck with one natural disaster, making it easier for them to work as a set. Seen as i was looking at the L' Aquila earthquake disaster I picked earthquakes.
Here are some designs which were influenced by my initial ideas:
Here are the three poster designs which i came up with. I felt my initial designs were all a bit to illustrative, so i decided to play on the simple warning sign design. You can see i used the three colours of the Italian flag, and made it for an Italian and an English audience.I tried to keep it more simple and serious, rather than to informal.
After completing the posters we were set the task of critiquing each others work in an anonymous style. We were split into halves and each half critiqued the other groups work. The feed back i got back was interesting. I felt a lot of the people thought i was using the colours as a symbol of danger and safety, green being safety and the red being danger, when in fact they were meant to work with the Italian text and the fact that the earthquake was in L' Aquila. Although a misunderstanding of the colours it still came across to the audience how i anticipated and helped make people aware of what to do in the event of an earthquake.
