OUGD405: Research, Collect, Communicate; Product

I started by brainstorming my ideas:

I decided to go down the route of 'PRODUCT AND PACKAGING'. From looking at Elvis, and the rockabilly fashion i decided to design packaging for a comb, and keeping with the element of info graphics, inside the packaging will be several instructions guiding you on how to style different quiffs.

Here are a few design sheets:

I drew out some initial ideas, considering i didn't know what type of comb i was going to package. i looked at three different types of combs, these were the three which i thought were most suitable but the ones which i was most likely to get hold of. I also looked at some logo designs and thought about names for the product.

after purchasing a comb i sketched a few ideas out for packaging. I weighed up the pros and cons for each. considering printing techniques and the cost.

I decided to pick the simple paper package idea. It was easy to design, the info graphic fit perfectly onto it and it was cheap enough for me to print onto.

I brainstormed some names for the product. I believe this was possibly the hardest part. Picking an appropriate name which fit the packaging and worked well with the product being sold.

So from here i took my ideas and designs onto illustrator.

I started by designing my logos:

After designing circular logos i realized that my packaging was going to be very long and thin, so the logos may not fit onto the packaging. I still could take the ideas, the colours and the fonts onto the packaging.

I designed two ideas for the front of the packaging and picked these two to develop. I liked the simple colours and the script font very 60's.

Below is my initial design for the inside layout of the packaging:

From my research i realized that designed different quiffs would take up to much space so i would only be able to put one set of instructions for one quiff.

To design the illustrations for the packaging i took pictures of my flat mate and drew around the different images on illustrator so they constructed into a vector based cartoon image of him. The illustrations worked really well with the style of design. I used two different script fonts for the final design as  i believed they both reflected the rockabilly scene and the time period of the 50's and 60's.

I kept the design simple and easy to use, the font was legible and readable and the colours worked really well.

Here are my final designs:
