Concept Workshop
From the first jar you could either get a; Bar, Restaurant or a Hotel
From the second jar you picked three words which would help you build your concept.
The concept words we picked were; Cushion, lamp and Lens.
We picked Bar from the first jar.
In our group of eight we split into three smaller groups, allocated each other one of the three words and mind mapped ideas. We passed the sheets around giving our ideas on each word.
After compiling a variety of interesting and debatable ideas we decided to base our concept around the word Lens.
From Lens we looked at vision and different perspectives, from this we started looking at the world through animals/ insect eyes, specifically flies as they have 360 vision, we then focused on Bee's. Bee's have 100 different Lens's in each of their eyes, giving a huge variety of perspective.
Sarah linked the Bee's concept with the bar by coming up with the name Beer Hive.
We decided that we'd cater for the age range of around 25+, More specifically we are aiming at young adults who are:
- Working so can afford alcohol
- Enjoy meeting new people
- Enjoy socialising
- Appreciate real beer, fine wines & cocktails
- Enjoy a sense of community
The bar would incorporate the theme Bee's allowing for the concept to influence our design on a larger scale. We sketched ideas of how we would lay out the bar. The centre would feature a hexagon (honey comb shape) bar, and tables would be placed around this. The idea that people would use the bar similar to how Bee's swarm around the Queen Bee. The interior would feature light wood, It would be clean and varnished.
We decided upon a micro brewery being on site, brewing our own beer which customers can enjoy being one of the main features of the bar itself. We would also supply common beers, ciders wines and spirits to cater for both male and female and for people who don't like craft beer.
Being specific with our ideas allowed us to define our audience more specifically.
We wanted the mood of the bar to be very relaxed, a sociable place for people to hang out and enjoy being at. With the appreciation of decent music and real beers. We decided a decent place for the location of the bar would be where the old walkabout was, as its central and people know where it is!
As this was a concept building exercise we only picked up lightly on design for the bar. Here are a few sketches of logos that I came up with:
I thought the workshop was a massive help, one thing i struggled with last year was coming up with a clever concept which drove me to a interest final idea. The workshop allowed me to think a lot more clearly of how I can work up to a concept which is decent enough to develop. I understand that the more questions you ask and the more specific you are the better the design and the ideas will be, and the more specific your audience will be. We were only given a day to come up with the whole concept, and all the groups presentations just showed how hard we can work, individually and as groups, to come up with interesting and intelligent ideas.
Here is our presentation:
