OUGD504: Design for print, Research binding

I took a binding workshop at vernon street so I could get a better understanding of the different binding methods.

We looked at three different methods:

Saddle stitch

Perfect Bound

Concertina

Saddle Stitch:

Saddle stitching was the first binding attempt. It was very easy to do and it was a quick method. It consists of the pages and the cover being stitched together. Im not sure if I'd use this as the binding for my book.

Concertina:

Concertina was a method which involved sticking sheets together back to back and applying them to some thick card. This is not the type of binding I want for my book but it was interesting to see how to make it and to see what the finished product was like.

Perfect Bound:

I am more likely to use this method of binding for my final book. We didn't actually finish putting the cover onto the pages, but we were shown how to stick all the pages together. This method produced a much cleaner final outcome, and it could also hold a lot more pages.
